About the artist

Hudson Shaoxia Zhang (b. 1953, Nanjing, China) is a Chinese-American artist and art historian whose career bridges rigorous scholarship and sustained painterly practice. A foundational figure in Chinese art historiography, Zhang has authored numerous global surveys, including a seminal work on modern Chinese art, and served as founding dean of the School of Arts at Hainan University.

Since the mid-1990s, Zhang has devoted his painting to golf landscapes, depicting them as meticulously designed, richly layered cultural sites. Drawing on Western traditions while embracing the contemplative principles of Chinese literati painting, his works combine expressive realism, immersive spatial construction, and a quietly meditative atmosphere.

Zhang's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts, the University of London, Museo Bellini in Florence, Sorbonne University in Paris, and the Aula Magna Art Center at UC Louvain in Belgium. His works are held in noted public and private collections across Europe, Asia, and North America.
